Moment of Truth
Over-relying on the criminal justice system has not kept survivors safe. Many survivors, especially from marginalized communities, say they don’t want to call the police because of the likelihood that doing so will make their situation worse. They need other options. We’ve known this for a long time, but the deaths of George Floyd and countless other Black, Brown, Indigenous and transgender people at the hands of police has led to a national moment of reckoning about deadly racism in the name of safety.
In this workshop, we’ll look at how our movement got here in the first place, try to make sense of many truths, and think together about how to advance survivors’ freedom, options, and connection in your communities.
Suggested quick reading: WSCADV’s Position on Criminal Responses to Violence and Moment of Truth national statement signed by over 40 sexual assault and DV coalitions.

Community-Based Responses to Harm
Come explore models for creating more options for survivors beyond the criminal-legal system that support their healing, and support people who cause harm in accountability and change. We will explore questions like: what does accountability really mean? What are the possibilities and what are the tensions in this work? What values do we hold at the center? We will also engage in some short scenario practice to think about how to incorporate these ideas into your everyday life.

For those incarcerated, for those who have experienced harm, and for their communities
In this workshop, we’ll talk about the dynamics of reentering.  Most of those coming out have themselves been crime victims in addition to causing harm to others. What does it look like to own and make amends for one’s actions AND to heal from the trauma inflicted by others? The goal is to move past polarization and to think together about how communities can come together towards healing and progress.

Yeha:Wi (She Who Holds Her Sacred) Services Team
Yeha:Wi, She Who Holds Her Sacred, is an ancestral name from Oneida language that embodies the spirit of a resilient woman who leads her community. Mother Nation is often a “first responder” to individuals and families in Indigenous communities statewide who are experiencing trauma that includes domestic and sexual abuse and human trafficking. The Yehai:Wi Services Team provides direct service advocacy through home visits, in the community and virtually. We bring cultural-based healing practices and traditional healing teachings to meet the needs of Indigenous people who live in urban settings or reside on the reservation to reconnect with their ancestral roots and healing practices. These practices have helped our people thrive across generations until today. Mother Nation believes that direct service advocacy combined with cultural based healing teachings build communities and families to heal, restore, and reclaim their resilience as survivors of layered and compounding historical trauma and abuse. Mother Nation’s approach in providing holistic direct service advocacy is prevention of MMIW (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women).

¡Basta!

Honoring Grief, Supporting Your Spirit
The presence of grief is proof that a connection existed, that a relationship was established. Even if the loss is something that we know needs to go, or even glad that it changes, there can still be that grief from losing what was. Sadly, in this moment, grief is touching us and our communities in unforeseen ways. At the same time, our isolation means that many of the ways we’ve become accustomed to processing grief are unavailable to us. And yet, there is still a need to release and express our sense of loss and mourning. You are invited to gather to acknowledge, feel, and let flow any grief, loss, or despair that you are experiencing. In doing so, we honor all of who we are, and our interconnectedness. You clear space for a deepening connection to your spirit, your soul, the truth of who you are. This session will involve movement, breath, connection and reflection. You are invited to bring something that symbolizes what you may be grieving or something that symbolizes how you honor and process grief, or how you connect to your soul.

Impact of the Domestic Violence Housing First Model on Survivor Safety and Housing Stability: Six Month Findings
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a leading cause of homelessness, yet little evidence exists about effective strategies to assist IPV survivors as they work to avoid homelessness while freeing themselves and their children from the abuse of partners and ex-partners. A demonstration evaluation is underway to examine if and how one promising model assists survivors in obtaining safe and stable housing over time. The Domestic Violence Housing First model involves providing survivors with mobile advocacy and/or flexible funding, depending on their individual needs. Findings across the first six months after homeless or unstably housed survivors contacted a domestic violence program for services are presented. The sample includes 375 survivors who approached one of five programs in Washington State and completed interviews shortly after contacting the service as well as six months later.

Drawing Connections: What does Reproductive Justice have to do with domestic violence advocacy?
For survivors of abuse, access to reproductive health care, control over their body, and the ways they choose to love and parent are often restricted by an abusive partner, medical professionals, and/or state control. Through survivor-centered advocacy, survivors are supported in making their own decisions about their bodies, creating families, and raising their children in loving and safe environments while challenging oppressive practices. Join us and learn about the connections between the Reproductive Justice framework and advocacy on behalf of survivors.

Technology Skills
This year, we’ve all been pushed to learn new skills and find creative ways to do our jobs. Based on our experience at WSCADV, we know that technology has been a source of that creativity as much as it has been a source of frustration and learning! This workshop will give us the chance for troubleshooting, peer learning, and resource sharing. We won’t be able to cover every tech issue out there but hopefully this will add to everyone’s toolkit and leave you feeling more confident as you navigate increasingly tech-dependent work in the time of COVID-19 and beyond!

We will explore technology through three major themes:
  1. Connection & Engagement
  2. Efficiency & Workflow
  3. Safety & Security

We will also cover quick tips, where to access free resources & learning materials, and we'll have time for a live Q&A and troubleshooting.
